Defence ministers of Poland and Germany: we have a shared goal of continued, joint support of Ukraine

18.03.2024

On March 26th, 2024 Poland and Germany will activate the armoured capabilities coalition for Ukraine in Warsaw, and from July Polish and German soldiers will serve together as part of the EU rapid response forces – these are the effects of the strengthening of Polish-German cooperation, announced today by ministers of defence from both countries.

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, wicepremier, minister obrony narodowej spotkał się z Borisem Pistoriusem, ministrem obrony Niemiec.

- Poland and Germany assume responsibility for the rapid response forces in Europe. From July this year our battle group, 2.5 thousand Polish soldiers and 2.5 thousand German soldiers will be ready for swift deployment and reaction. These are the rapid deployment forces fulfilling the tasks of the European Union strategic compass

- the deputy prime minister W. Kosiniak - Kamysz said after the meeting with the German minister of defence.

On March 18th in Helenów, Władysław Kosiniak – Kamysz, deputy prime minister and minister of national defence has met with Boris Pistorius, German minister of defence.

- This is a very good signal – of cooperation, friendship and partnership. Of thinking what to do today to help Ukraine and work for the security of Europe and NATO’s eastern flank, the security of our future. This is an important matter. Our cooperation today, as members of the European Union, members of NATO, is a foundation tied to the security of Europe, foundation tied to our achievements as democracies, the civilizational wealth, the rules and values where an individual’s life and the rule of law are the base. This is a foundation that we will develop and strengthen. We were talking about very concrete areas of cooperation between our countries in the military and political dimensions

- the deputy prime minister said after the meeting.

The ministers of defence of Poland and Germany were, among other things, areas of Polish-German security and defence cooperation, the aid to the embattled Ukraine and the collaboration within the framework of NATO and the European Union. The common procurement of ammunition for Ukraine by the European Union states was also among the things discussed.

- On March 26th we will activate, as Poland and Germany, the coalition of armoured capabilities for Ukraine. This will be one of the most important coalitions to have been created. Our two countries are the leaders of this project. Our other partners have already applied: Great Britain, Sweden, Italy, all of whom are declaring their willingness to take part in this coalition. I would like to thank the minister for his contribution to the NATO – Ukraine Training and Education Centre in Bydgoszcz. This is the first such tangible initative. This is a structure that will be built and get Ukraine closer to NATO. Germany will be taking part in this project. I want to also thank for the participation of German soldiers in the Dragon 24 excercise

– the deputy prime minister stressed.

As the Polish minister of national defence said, the strengthening of cooperation inside the framework of the Weimar was also discussed.

- The Weimar Triangle is an important initiative. Poland will host the meeting of its ministers of defence. Our today’s meeting complements the preparation for the meeting of the ministers of defence which will take place in the first days of May in Wrocław. Training, excercises and preparation of our soldiers is a common denominator that connects all of us. The Polish-German friendship, common relations, excercises, trainings and military presence are the best confirmation of Article 5. The more soldiers and equipment there is on the eastern flank the greater the certainty of its use

- the deputy prime minister said.

- I am glad for the secure, friendly cooperation. It is very important. We are looking at Poland as an extremely important partner, a friend. Poland is our central partner in the area of Central-Eastern Europe’s security and defence. This applies to the aid of Ukraine and the armoured coalition as well. I am thankful for these initiatives. We have many bilateral projects. We are working and will continue to work on them. Training, education, shared excercises and the development of capabilities – these are our areas of collaboration

- said Boris Pistorius, German minister of defence.
