Meeting of the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency with representatives of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the American operator Southern Nuclear at the Alvin W. Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant.

12.03.2024

Representatives of the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA), headed by the President of the PAA, Andrzej Głowacki, had the opportunity to visit the newest American nuclear power plant using the AP1000 reactor. Two of the four units in the power plant are based on the same technology that is to be used in the first nuclear power plant in Poland.

The PAA delegation visits the Vogtle nuclear power plant in the USA

During a technical visit to the power plant, the PAA’s delegation became familiar with the safety systems and procedures used in the newest units No. 3 and 4, as well as with the operation of the control room. The final stages of testing of unit no. 4 are currently underway. Nuclear unit no. 3 was put into operation on July 31, 2023.

The visit to the nuclear power plant marks the beginning of a one-month internship of two employees of the PAA at the American nuclear regulatory authority. This will be another edition of internships organized in cooperation with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

During the visit to the USA, the PAA’s delegation will also take part in the 36th Conference of the U.S. NRC.

Cooperation with the USA

The visit takes place as part of the PAA's extensive cooperation with the NRC. Cooperation with the USA in the field of nuclear safety and radiation protection serves to prepare the National Atomic Energy Agency to perform tasks arising from the Polish Nuclear Power Program. This year, NRC experts have already completed a three-week visit to Warsaw, during which the employees of the NRC and the PAA exchanged experiences in the review of procedures and practices in the area of licensing of nuclear power plants.
