Political cooperation
Historical view
The establishment of diplomatic relations between the Polish People’s Republic (PRL – Polska Rezcpospolita Ludowa) and the Republic of Seychelles took place on 12th of February 1979, as a result of the publication of a joint press communique in the capitals of both countries – Warsaw and Victoria. Seychelles remain within the territorial competence of the Embassy of Poland in Nairobi. In June 2006 the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Seychelles in Poland was appointed – Mr. Wiesław Judycki, residing in Gdańsk.
Political cooperation after 1989
Bilateral political relations between Poland and Seychelles have been limited. In 2017 The Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Joanna Wronecka met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Seycheles on the margins of the summit of the Francophone States, seeking support for Poland’s candidacy as Non-Permanent Member of UN Security Council
Economic cooperation
The basis of the economy of Seychelles is tourism, which employs about 30% of the active population and brings about 80% of budget revenues. Industry, including significant for the country - fish industry, accounts for 14% of GDP, the rest of state’s income is generated by the agriculture. Despite of the crisis in 2008 and the need to apply for financial assistance to the International Monetary Fund, Seychelles economic growth has remained stable for a few years (around 3.5% of GDP per year), but with a clearly negative balance of foreign trade. The islands mainly export fish, vanilla, cinnamon and copra, while they import machines and equipment, petroleum and chemical products and – unable to meet their own domestic production needs – food. Gross domestic product per capita, worth over 17 000 USD, is one of the highest in Africa. Unemployment remains at 5% and there is a significant lack of the manpower on the labour market. According to data of the Ministry of Enterprise and Technology, in 2018 Poland exported goods for total value of 6.3 million euros to Seychelles, compared to 2.7 million in exports and 0.1 millin in exports in bilateral foreign trade in 2017.
