We have long striven to bring Visegrád Group member states closer to you, though so far we have not had an opportunity to introduce their cuisines or especially the desserts. For this reason we have implemented the V4 With a Cup of Tea Project to showcase each country’s signature desserts, complete with recipes. Enjoy the read and have fun baking before your afternoon cup of tea.

[Slovakia — quark cheese buns]

… Work the dough by hand or in the kneader, until it becomes lush and shiny. Watch it closely. Next preheat the oven and bake for the first 10 minutes in a higher temperature. Do not open the oven during this time. Thanks to this the yeast will do a good job and the dough will not collapse….

[Poland — Szarlotka Apple Pie]

… Every family has a different recipe for apple pie. You can also buy it from a cake shop, where it usually looks great and has a pillowy meringue topping, for example…. When I was wee, some things were difficult to get from shops. Fruit would be scarce in winter months, but apples were commonplace, so one made preserves for the winter. Those later went into apple pie, providing an afternoon dessert for several days. ….

[Hungary — Somlói galuska]

… This dessert was invented in the late 50s by a waiter at the Gundel restaurant in Budapest, and the original confectioner lived near Somlyó Hill, hence the name. The galuska are noodles prepared by tearing off tiny pieces of the dough and throwing them on boiling water. From appearance this dessert resembles such noodles….

[Czech Republic — baba cake]

…[One eats the baba cake] often after the family dinner during the weekend. Children ask for it as their birthday cake. Recently, it can be bought from shopping centres, bakeries and cake shops, but many people still believe the home-made is the best….
