Polish aid for the Young Men's Christian Association in El Minya, Egypt!

14.12.2019

On December 14th, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Cairo celebrated the handing over of a bus to the YMCA, which was purchased through the funds of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland as part of "Polish aid". The ceremony was attended by Ambassador Michał Łabenda, the Chairman of YMCA, Zain Fakry, members of the association, as well as representatives of local authorities and associations and the media, in addition to city residents and the organization's beneficiaries.

YMCA

The goal of the "Polish aid" project was to strengthen the YMCA integration activities in the form of buying a bus, which will significantly contribute to expanding the opportunities for participation of the local Christian and Muslim community in the activities of this organization. Thanks to this, even people from neighboring towns and regions will be able to take advantage of its educational and sports activities.

The main purpose of the YMCA is to support the physical, mental and spiritual development of children, adolescents and adults, regardless of gender and religion. YMCA works like a local club - it is a place to spend free time, recreation, develop interests and social integration. The local YMCA branch in El Minya was founded in 1966. In 2013, the headquarters of the organization was attacked and destroyed during bloody riots and unrest involving members of the Muslim Brotherhood. During these events, a large part of the YMCA facilities were burned, plundered and destroyed, which resulted in the slowdown of social, integration, cultural and sport-educational activities previously carried out for about 1000 people, including 400 children. In the years 2015-2016, with the support of the El Minya province authorities and the Egyptian Armed Forces, part of the headquarters infrastructure was rebuilt, but the YMCA still needs funds to return to its previous volume of activity.
