The Visegrad Group holds a film festival in Cairo

The two-weeks festival will present films from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary in Al-Hanager Cinema in Cairo Opera House.

Over the first two weeks of November, the embassies of the Visegrad Four countries – Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia – organize the film festival under the theme: “Cairo V4 Group Film Festival for Children and Youth 2020”.

Each V4 member will feature cinematic gems including ‘Double Trouble’ (Poland), Vuk - The Little Fox (Hungary), The Oddsockeaters (Czech Republic), The Cellar (Slovakia).

This year, Poland assumed the Group’s annual, rotational presidency, aiming to actively promote Central Europe and the V4 as a strong regional and global partner.

All screenings begin at 7 p.m. in Al-Hanager Cinema in Cairo Opera House.

The festival is FREE. All the precautionary measures are applying during the event, according to the rules of Ministry of Culture.

‘Double Trouble’ (Poland, 2017) by Marta Karwowska

Friendship is no piece of cake, which Julka knows all too well. The twelve-year-old is in a boarding school and has never had a real friend. Summer comes, and with it begin problems. In- stead of joining her parents, who work in Canada, Julka ends up at her aunt’s in Warsaw. There she meets Olek, a boy who lives next door. Their adventure begins when a treasure map falls into their hands. In their way to solve the mystery stand a gang of thieves, a chain-smoking babysitter, and a mysterious candy-eater. They race against the clock, and the mystery becomes even more muddled when it turns out that nobody really is who they claim to be. If she wants this story to end well for her, Julka must overcome her distrust and nd the courage to make a friendship.

‘Vuk - The Little Fox’ (Hungary, 1981) by Attila Dargay

The Little Fox, known in Hungary as Vuk, is a Hungarian animated film, based on the novel Vuk by István Fekete. Vuk, the little fox lives happily among his many siblings in their parents' home. As he is livelier and snappier than the others, one day he wanders into the forest alone. As soon as he arrives home, he discovers that his whole family has disappeared. Only later, he comes to know that the responsible are the feared humans, the hunters (called among animals the 'bare-skins'). But luckily for Vuk, his old uncle Karak starts to patronize him, and the seasoned elder brings Vuk up to be the most cunning and successful fox in the forest.

‘The Oddsockeaters’ (Czech Republic, 2016) by Galina Miklínová

Czech animated film based on a same name novel „the Oddsockeaters“ (Lichožrouti) by Pavel Šrut and Galina Miklínová. Oddsockeaters are small creatures who live with us humans and they are the ones to be  blamed for that humanity is always left with only one of each pair of socks – the odd. Since they feed on socks! The fates of the main protagonists of the Oddsockeaters and their biggest opponent, the weirdo and the abandoned Professor, are connected by the story of the main character, the little Oddsockeater Hihlík, whom great adventures are waiting for in the film.

‘Lady Winter’ (Slovakia, 1985) by Juraj Jakubisko

A fairy tale ('Perinbaba') not only for children about Jacob, who through his courage, manages to trick death. The film plays with man's never-ending desire for happiness, love and victory over death. Mrs. Winter, The Feather Fairy, rules the world and also, being so open hearted, raises little Jacob, who almost died in an avalanche. Life in the fairytale is perfect, the little boy is immortal, he doesn't get older, and he has everything. Even though his life is perfect he watches human life through a looking glass. He sees a young girl Alžbetka growing into a young lady, and he desires to be a normal person and live with his love.
