Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, specialising in the physics of semiconductors.
Elected Fellow and former Foreign Secretary of Academia Europaea, elected Fellow of the American Physical Society. Former Deputy Minister of Science.

In the science policy advisory capacity, assisted European Commission as a member/head of major science and innovation advisory bodies to the EC (EURAB, ISTAG, Governing Board of the JRC and Smart Specialisation Strategy Platform, FETAG, EIC Pilot). In 2011 he formulated a detailed vision of the European Innovation Council (EIC) as a technology innovation-oriented twin to the European Research Council (ERC). Acting as a Future Emerging Technologies (FET)-AG chair, conducted, and coordinated analysis to underpin the EIC.
