Bulgarian philologist and political scientist, who completed her PhD studies at Université de Bordeaux. In 2009-2017 she was a Member of the European Parliament. In 2017, she was appointed Member of the European Commission, first acting as Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, and since 2019 as Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.

Her responsibilities include overseeing the implementation of the Horizon Europe programme which funds research and innovation; developing the European Research Area in cooperation with Member States, ensuring balance between research and economic priorities, and strengthening international cooperation in the areas of education, research, innovation and culture.
