GUGiK at the Fifteenth Session of UN-GGIM (August 6 - 8 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA)
11.08.2025
During the 15th Session of the UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography was represented by the Director of the Department of Strategy and International Cooperation, Ewa Surma, and the Deputy Director of the Department of Geodesy and Cartography, Renata Brzozowska.
UN-GGIM experts discussed issues related to global challenges facing geospatial information, such as data production, data access and use, experiences in implementing the Integrated Geospatial Information Framework, cooperation and coordination of global geospatial information management.
The meeting also focused on financial issues and the lack of sufficient funding for geoinformation at the UN. Currently, two centers of excellence are actively operating, focusing on promoting and developing best practices, knowledge, and skills in the field of geoinformation. These centers will be used strategically to support the progress and implementation of activities at the UN-GGIM level.
It was emphasized that spatial information, including land management and the global geodetic supply chain, as well as data centers and analyses, are crucial at the national, regional and global levels.
Additionally, to support the 2030 Agenda, Member States are encouraged to adopt the First Joint Development Plan for Global Geodesy as a guiding framework for strengthening national geodesy capabilities. The plan outlines key actions to strengthen the global geodesy supply chain.
Furthermore, it highlights emerging issues such as the future spatial geoinformation ecosystem and the challenges posed by new technologies, including artificial intelligence.
The GUGiK delegation submitted an intervention supporting the activities of the Working Group on Policy and Legal Framework for Geospatial Information Management.
