26.11.2025
The sixth phase of fieldwork conducted by the team implementing the "Made in Iraq” project concluded in Baghdad on November 22.
The project “Made in Iraq” (2023-2027) explores architectural and urban transformations of Baghdad through the eyes of Iraqi professionals who worked in the city during the last two decades of the twentieth century. It analyzes their ideas and designs, responses to changing realities, and means of resilience.
A four-member team carries out the research: Dr. Dorota Woroniecka-Krzyżanowska (project leader, IFiS PAS), Prof. Ghadha al-Silk (Department of Architecture, University of Baghdad), Aleksandra Wojtaszek, M.A. (GSSR/IFiS PAS), and Raghad Fadhil, M.A. (Department of Architecture, University of Baghdad). Each team member focuses on a different topic, including post-war reconstruction, transformations in the urban fabric, housing shortages, and the broader responses of urban actors in times of crisis. The project’s objectives include publishing articles, fostering academic exchange, and supporting cooperation between Polish and Iraqi academic institutions, building on the two countries’ long history of mutual collaboration.
The project is funded by the National Science Center, Poland, and implemented at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences.
On November 18, the team met with the Head of the Polish diplomatic mission in Iraq, Wojciech Bożek, to discuss the research project and planned activities for 2026.
