Piotr Kearney, CEO of ORLEN Upstream Polska, shared his experience in the effective development of smaller-scale and mature fields.

The history of the world oil industry began in Poland more than 170 years ago. This translates into unique experience in production from mature deposits that have been explored for decades, as well as in developing smaller-scale deposits. During the just-concluded Libya Energy & Economic Summit in Tripoli, these experiences were shared by Piotr Kearney, CEO of ORLEN Upstream Polska. He took part in the panel discussion "Scaling Up: Maximising Recovery, Marginal Fields, and the Road to 2 Million BPD," dedicated to increasing Libya's hydrocarbon production, production optimization, and realizing the potential of marginal fields.

During the panel, Piotr Kearney highlighted the key role of long-term planning, a thorough understanding of geology, and consistently building technical competence. In Poland, ORLEN has a unique database of seismic data and experience from more than 20,000 wells. Numerous projects are developed based on precise economic analysis, a phased investment approach and a long-term production perspective. The CEO also stressed that thanks to the integration of competencies across the value chain and experience in markets, including Poland, Canada, Norway, Pakistan and Libya, ORLEN has been successful in executing even the most demanding upstream projects. Advanced technological solutions are also being developed in the Group, including tools based on artificial intelligence that use extensive databases. Upstream competencies are also used in geothermal, CCS and hydrogen storage projects.

Smaller scale deposits are characteristic of Poland. The country does not have huge oil fields, typical, for example, of the Gulf states, but numerous fields with smaller, more limited resources, which we can describe as marginal compared to the potential of the former. They often do not justify the construction of a full infrastructure from scratch, but their development becomes cost-effective in combination with existing installations or as satellites of larger projects. At the same time, in order to increase domestic production to the levels assumed in the ORLEN 2035 strategy, it is necessary precisely to consistently reach for such resources.

ORLEN has a presence in Libya through ORLEN Upstream North Africa.
