NATO Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Helsingborg

On 21-22 May, a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation took place in Helsingborg, Sweden. Poland was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski.
The ministerial session was preceded by a dinner of the members of the NATO-Ukraine Council hosted by the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenergard, attended by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Her Majesty Queen Silvia, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, and the EU representative. This was the first ministerial meeting hosted by Sweden, the newest member of NATO.
Discussions during the working session focused on preparations for the July NATO summit in Ankara, defence spending, increasing arms production, and support for Ukraine. Ministers also discussed the impact of the situation in the Middle East on Euro-Atlantic security.
The Polish representative drew attention to the threats posed by Russia and its escalatory rhetoric. He emphasised that the unity of the Alliance is of particular importance today. He also called for the fulfilment of commitments from The Hague regarding defence spending, highlighting Poland’s achievements in this regard. The head of Polish diplomacy further argued that it is essential to continue political and material support for Ukraine.
During a meeting with Polish and foreign media, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction with the US President’s announcement regarding U.S. military presence in Poland.
