Polish Film Minghun Inaugurates the Official Opening of the 34th European Union Film Festival in Singapore

23.04.2025

On 23 April 2025, under the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland had the honour of opening the 34th European Union Film Festival (EUFF) by the screening of the Polish film Minghun.

EUFF 2025 - entrance to the cinema hall for "Minghun" screening.

Cross-cultural story, rich in visual storytelling and emotional depth, Minghun was met with an enthusiastic response from the audience.

The screening was preceded by opening remarks delivered by Kevin Than, the Chairman of the Singapore Film Society, H.E. Iwona Piórko, Ambassador of the European Union to Singapore and H.E. Tadeusz Chomicki, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Singapore.

In his speech, Ambassador Chomicki underscored the vital role of culture in turbulent time we live in with unjustified aggression, conflicts, social tensions, and global challenges. He also highlighted contribution of Polish cinema to the international film landscape and underlined Poland’s rising status as a sought-after location for global film productions.

The opening programme also featured Dying to Defrost, a short film by young Singaporean director Heather Ann Abey, reflecting the EUFF’s commitment to supporting emerging local talents alongside European works.

The event brought together representatives of the diplomatic corps, government agencies, cultural institutions, academia, media, the Singaporean creative sector and the Polish community.

The opening night set a new record in the festival's history, with over 300 attendees registering for the event—the highest RSVP count ever recorded for an EUFF opening ceremony in Singapore.

A pre-screening reception in the cinema foyer provided a platform for informal exchange and networking. Guests were welcomed with the signature Singapore Sling cocktail, generously sponsored by Polish company Lei Food & Drinks, adding a festive, local touch to the evening.

EUFF is the longest-running foreign film festival in Singapore. Through showcasing the best of contemporary cinema, it celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of Europe and promotes dialogue, encourages conversations and exchanges while upholding core EU values of respect for human dignity and inclusivity.
