Another member of a spy ring detained

Officers of the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained one more suspect in the investigation related to a spy ring operating on the territory of Poland on behalf of the Russian Federation. The detainee is a Russian citizen. The men heard charges and was arrested for 3 months upon the court’s decision.

The investigation is conducted by the Internal Security Agency under supervision of the National Prosecutor’s Office. The suspect was detained on 11 June this year, on the territory of the Śląskie (Silesian) Voivodeship. The detainee is a professional player of the premier hockey league. On the territory of Poland he carried out tasks for the benefit of the foreign intelligence, consisting in, inter alia, conducting reconnaissance of critical infrastructure in several voivodships. On regular basis the suspect informed his principals about the results of his reconnaissance operations, for which he was regularly paid.

The detained foreigner has been residing in Poland since October 2021. The evidence gathered in the course of the investigation confirms his involvement and active participation in fulfilling the tasks that he was assigned with.

On the basis of the materials gathered, on 13 June this year, the court decided to put the man in custody for 3 months.

The Russian man is the 14 individual detained in the investigation, charged with collaborating with the Russian special services. All of them have been identified as foreigners from across the Poland’s eastern border. The whole group was used by the Russians to conduct intelligence activities, including railways' monitoring, as well as to spread propaganda targeted against NATO, Poland and the Polish government’s policy. The suspects prepared also acts of sabotage, ordered by the Russian intelligence. The whole ring was paid for the tasks carried out.

Currently, the Internal Security Agency is continuing intensive operations related to this case.
