Indictment in spy network case

21.11.2023

A bill of indictment has been filed against 16 foreigners accused of conducting espionage activities on the territory of the Republic of Poland for the benefit of Russian special services and of participating in an organized criminal group. This is the result of the investigation carried out by the Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) under the Prosecutor's Office supervision.

Material gathered in the Internal Security’s Agency's investigation indicates that the accused carried out a number of tasks on behalf of Russian special services. The commissioned tasks included the reconnaissance of military facilities and critical infrastructure, monitoring and documenting the passage of transports with military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, or carrying out preparations for the derailment of trains transporting aid to Ukraine.

The accused also carried out propaganda efforts aimed at stirring up the sentiment against the Ukrainian people, which would result in Poland ceasing to provide aid to Ukraine. The first arrests in the case took place in early March 2023.

Against all 16 accused, the court applied a preventive measure in the form of temporary custody, which continues to this day.

All accused pleaded guilty to the charges and voluntarily surrendered to the punishment. The investigation was conducted by the Poland's Internal Security Agency under the Prosecutor's Office supervision.

The identification and dismantling of a spy network operating on the Polish territory for Russian services is a significant success for Polish counterintelligence. As a result of the effective work of ABW officers it was possible to neutralize a very serious threat emanating from the activities of a state hostile towards us, namely Russia. In view of the tense security situation, the Polish counterintelligence services are constantly taking steps aimed at identifying the hostile actions of Russian and Belarusian services.
