The New Form art gallery agents detained

31.10.2023

Officers of the Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained further individuals involved in a large-scale fraud in the art trade. The men were directly involved in assisting the people running the New Form art gallery in Sweden - Joanna S. and her son Mikael S. - who were detained at the end of 2021, whose activities consisted of defrauding customers and disposing of their property adversely.

The detained men acted as agents in an art investment venture since October 2013. Acting in what they called 'art investments', they accepted money from entities and individuals for a specified period of time with a predetermined interest rate. Many of these investments were never backed by real works of art. The men - by virtue of the commissions they received - achieved a total financial benefit of more than PLN 14 million.

In the course of their activities, the ABW officers searched the suspects' places of residence and registered address. Both heard a charge of running a para-banking business without obtaining the relevant permit. Preventive measures in the form of a property surety and police supervision were applied against the detainees. So far, 37 suspects have been charged in the case.
