In two separate cases, the preliminary proceedings carried out by Poland’s civilian counter-intelligence agency - the ABW - resulted in handing up indictments against three men on charges of spying or complicity in spying for Russia or Belarus.

On May 4,,2022, the prosecution office filed an indictment against Grzegorz M. (name withheld pursuant to Poland’s privacy laws) charged with demonstrating his readiness to cooperate with the intelligence branch of the State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus (KGB) and attempting to provide it with classified information. M. was nabbed by the ABW in late 2021. Before he retired in 2001, he had worked for many years in different uniformed services, including communist-era ZOMO (riot police) and MO (police) as well as the Polish Border Guard.

Five days later, a similar indictment was handed up against Marcin K. (again name withheld) for taking part in the intelligence activities of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) to the detriment of Poland. Another person indicted in this case is Radosław K. who faces charges of complicity in spying. As found by the ABW who detained the duo, K. and R. had developed a scheme in which the latter – an owner of a visa agency – in return for material benefits, provided the former – a subcontracted visa agent – with information which he then handed over to the FSB. As an accomplice, R. was fully aware of the nature of activities of K.

Upon the court’s decision, the three indicted men have been put on remand.
