Meeting between Ambassador Mirosław Broiło and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Mr Barham Salih
04.03.2026
On 4 March 2026, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Mr Mirosław Broiło met with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr Barham Salih.
Ambassador Broiło congratulated Mr Salih on taking up his post in January this year, and expressed his appreciation and support for High Commissioners's approach to his function. Poland will support the UNHCR's ambitious plans and initiatives aimed at halving the number of refugees by 2035. At the same time we will uphold the principled position to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the simultaneous search for pragmatic solutions to humanitarian crises.
During the conversation, the importance of the High Commissioner's activities outside Geneva was emphasised, including his visits to the Holy See and countries grappling with refugee crises, such as Kenya, Chad, Turkey, Jordan and, most recently, Ukraine. In this context, Barham Salih expressed gratitude for Poland's support for Ukraine and its refugee diaspora, highlighting it as a model of successful integration, including creating conditions that ensure refugees' independence and self-sufficiency. Ambassador Broiło expressed his hope that the High Commissioner would be able to participate in the Ukraine Recovery Conference, which is scheduled to take place in Gdańsk in June 2026.
The Ambassador and the High Commissioner also discussed the humanitarian consequences of the current situation in the Middle East and the conflict in the Persian Gulf region, and both expressed hope for a swift diplomatic solution.
Attendees included the Head of the Europe Office, Mr Philippe Leclerc, and the UNHCR representative in Poland, Mr Kevin Allen.
