Poland in the UN

On 2 March, Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau travelled to Geneva. The visit’s programme included participation in high-level segments of the 49th session of the Human Rights Council and the Conference on Disarmament as well as meetings with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, Director General of the International Organization for Migration António Vitorino, and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer.

The 48th session of the Human Rights Council was held in Geneva from September 13 to October 11, 2021. It was the sixth session in which Poland participated as a member state in term 2020-2022.

Delegation of Poland participated in the 72nd session of the Executive Committee of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was held on 4-8 October, 2021, in Geneva. The Committee is an annual forum for discussion of member states on the directions of activities in the field of international protection and the situation of refugees in the world, as well as the UNHCR activities in this area.

On September 29-30, 2021, the Permanent Representatives of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to the United Nations Office in Geneva held joint visits to the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Antonio Vitorino and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR), Filippo Grandi. The purpose of the meetings was to inform on the current situation at the borders of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia with Belarus and to condemn the actions of Belarus constituting a hybrid threat to stability and security in the European Union.

Undersecretary of State at the Polish MFA Paweł Jabłoński attended a high-level ministerial meeting on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, which was convened by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. The meeting in the hybrid format was held on 13 September 2021 at the UN headquarters in Geneva.

Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski presented his credentials to the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.
