Poland in the UN

Political prisoners cannot be forgotten – the international community must continue efforts to release them – called the participants of the event on human rights in Russia, organized by Poland and Luxembourg on 24 September 2024 within the grounds of the United Nations Office in Geneva.

At the UN headquarters in New York, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected a new bureau, which will hold its functions for one year, until July 2025. The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the UN, Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski, was appointed vice-chairman of the Council.

When visiting New York on 15–18 July, Minister Wiśniewski spoke during the general debate of the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and in the High-Level Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). He also opened an accompanying event co-organised by Poland concerning the role of resilient infrastructure in ensuring food security.

On 10 May, the UN General Assembly in New York adopted a resolution expanding Palestine's rights in the UN. Poland, along with 142 UN member states, including the majority of the EU, voted in favour of the resolution. Nine countries voted against and 25 abstained.

Since 2007, Poland has continuously supported Palestine under the development cooperation programme. After 7 October 2023, we have considerably increased our humanitarian aid, by making additional contributions to UNRWA, UNICEF, and the WFP (the World Food Programme), and provided medical assistance to hospitals in Egypt which also treat Gazan patients.

President Andrzej Duda took part in the opening session of the event on building global resilience and promoting sustainable development through infrastructure connectivity of the United Nations General Assembly. A year ago, on the Polish initiative, a resolution was passed on building sustainable development through infrastructure development.

President Andrzej Duda's talks at the UN headquarters in New York were centred on security issues in the context of the ongoing conflicts: in Ukraine and the Middle East, and sustainable development. The Polish leader and his Spouse are paying a visit to the United States.
