Pole elected to Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD)

On 24 June 2021, Professor Michał Balcerzak of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń was elected member of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) by a majority of 135 votes, during the 29th meeting of the state parties of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which was held in the UN’s New York headquarters.

The Committee is one of the UN treaty bodies established to oversee the states parties’ fulfillment of their commitments under international law arising from the ratified conventions.  In the Committee’s 50-year history, Prof. Balcerzak will be its second Polish member and now the only Pole among expert members of the ten existing treaty bodies.
