A ceremony marking the 100th birthday of Ms Barbara Zbierzchowska took place on 31 January at the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney, with the participation of her closest family members and friends.
Ms Zbierzchowska was born in Sierpc, Poland, where she lived through the Second World War. She later studied in Łódź and became a teacher. In 1981, she travelled to Australia to visit her daughter for a short stay, but ultimately remained there permanently.
She remains an active and cheerful person to this day, with interests including chess, bridge, travel, and even social media.
The Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney, Piotr Rakowski, presented the celebrant with a commemorative letter and flowers, wishing her continued health and joy in every new day.
As he noted, paraphrasing Abraham Lincoln, “It is not the years in your life that count, but the life in your years,” and the life of the celebrated centenarian is a clear testament to this idea.
