Polish Armed Forces Day Commemorated in Sydney
20.08.2025
On 15 August, Piotr Rakowski, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney, paid tribute to those who gave their lives for Poland by laying flowers at the grave of Zbigniew Jasiński at the Catholic Cemetery in Rookwood.
Thanks to the efforts of Dr Bogumiła Żongołłowicz, the poet's grave has been restored and entered into the Register of Veterans' Graves maintained by the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN). The ceremony marking the unveiling of the "The Grave of a Veteran" plaque was attended by Dr Żongołłowicz, who has devoted many years to researching the history of the post-war Polish community in Australia, as well as representatives of the Federation of Polish Organisations in New South Wales, the Association of Polish Combatants in Australia, and the Polish School in Ashfield.
Also present was the banner of the now-defunct New South Wales District of the Home Army Association, of which Zbigniew Jasiński had been a long-standing member.
The ceremony served as a fitting tribute to the memory of Zbigniew Jasiński and to the enduring legacy of Polish veterans whose service and sacrifice continue to be honoured by the Polish community in Australia.
