03.12.2021

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki talked to the Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre on the phone. This is a continuation of a series of talks held by the head of the Polish government with European leaders on geopolitical threats in Europe. This time too, the main topic was the current situation on the Polish-Belarusian border of the European Union. The head of the Norwegian government expressed his support for the measures taken by Poland. Moreover, the politicians discussed the situation in Ukraine and bilateral issues, including those related to the economic cooperation and, in particular, the presence of Norwegian companies in Poland.

Crisis on the eastern border of the European Union and NATO

The border between Poland and Belarus is the place of hybrid attacks which are being launched by the regime of Lukashenko. This is an organised operation controlled and supervised by the Belarusian services. This is also the biggest attempt to destabilise the entire European Union in 30 years.

Poland does not give in to blackmail and does everything to defend the borders of the European Union and NATO. We take joint actions with our allies to respond to the pressure exerted by our eastern neighbour. During the talks with the head of the Norwegian government, Prime Minister Morawiecki stressed the importance of joint actions taken to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.

Apart from the situation on the eastern border of the EU, there are also other intensive activities carried out in the East – cyberattacks and manipulations of gas prices and supplies, the aim of which is to cause an energy crisis. Moreover, it is possible to observe a growing military involvement of Russia around Ukraine

Norway expresses its support for Poland

During the phone call, the head of the Norwegian government expressed his support for the measures taken by Poland. He emphasised the need for close cooperation between the NATO countries, among other things, to solve the migration crisis.

Recently, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway Anniken Huitfeldt also expressed solidarity with our country: ‘We fully support Poland, Lithuania and the EU in their efforts to deal with the crisis caused by the Belarusian authorities along the external borders of the European Union.

Only international solidarity can stop treats from the East

The international crisis caused by Alexander Lukashenko’s actions shows that the geopolitical situation is very serious and requires a number of measures and diplomatic efforts from the Polish government. Therefore, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki continues the meetings and talks with the leaders of the international community. The head of the Polish government stresses that this conflict involves not only Poland. It is an attempt to violate the eastern border of NATO and the EU.

So far, the Prime Minister has met, for instance, with the leaders of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. The leaders discussed the current situation on the Polish-Belarusian border of the European Union and joint operations.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also talked to the Prime Ministers of Iraq and Kurdistan Regional Government, among other things, about migrants used by the Belarusian regime. Previous diplomatic efforts made by Poland were successful – far fewer migrants come to Belarus with each passing day, even today. Recently, the head of the Polish government also met with Avril Haines, U.S. Director of National Intelligence. They agreed on the need for close cooperation on security on NATO’s eastern flank.
