Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 5th anniversary of 2020 presidential election in Belarus
09.08.2025
On the anniversary of the presidential election held on 9 August 2020, Poland, guided by the principles of freedom and solidarity, reaffirms its support for all Belarusian citizens striving to restore the rule of law, democracy, and the respect for human rights in their homeland.
Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland:
The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the authorities of the Republic of Belarus to return to complying with the commitments made by the country when it joined the UN and the OSCE and to release all prisoners of conscience, including Andrzej Poczobut. This gesture would help rebuild trust among the Central and Eastern Europe countries and restore stability in the entire region.
Belarus belongs to the European family of nations, and its path to lasting development and prosperity leads primarily through Europe.
The Polish government supports the efforts of the Council of Europe to maintain dialogue with a democratic civil society in Belarus.
Following the onset of the full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2022, one of the decisions of the Council of Europe was to suspend all cooperation with the Belarusian authorities. However, dialogue with civil society continues.
In September 2022, a decision was made to establish the Council of Europe Contact Group for Cooperation with Belarusian Democratic Forces and Civil Society. In 2025, the Group is still operating.
As a result of the Polish presidency in the Council of the European Union in 2025, the Kościuszko Forum was established. The Forum is an initiative concerning human rights and civil liberties in Belarus and thus falls within the scope of the Contact Group's work. It is worth emphasizing that the Kościuszko Forum is the result of the synergy of actions by both institutions of the European Union and the Council of Europe.
