Celebration of May 3rd National Day of Poland in Nicosia

On the occasion of the 231st anniversary of the adoption of the May 3rd Constitution, on May 10th a piano recital by the Polish pianist Piotr Alexewicz was held at the Pallas Theatre in Nicosia.
Upon invitation of the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland Mrs Irena Lichnerowicz-Augustyn and the Honorary Consul General Mr Leandros Papaphilippou the concert was attended by representatives of Cypriot authorities, economic, scientific and cultural circles, the Polish community in Cyprus and the diplomatic corps. The Government of the Republic of Cyprus was represented by Mrs Natasa Pilides, Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry.
The celebration of our National Day provided an opportunity to reiterate solidarity with the fighting Ukraine. Gathered guests commemorated the victims of the Russian aggression with a minute of silence. A short speech was delivered by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Ruslan Nimchynskyi, who thanked for the solidarity shown so far and called for further support.
The ceremony was also the occasion to present state decorations for outstanding merits for Polish-Cypriot cooperation in the field of archeology. On behalf of the President of the Republic of Poland, Ambassador Irena Lichnerowicz-Augustyn awarded:
- Prof. Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka with Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta,
- Dr Henryk Meyza with Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta,
- Dr Łukasz Miszk with Gold Cross of Merit.
After the official part, invited guests listened to masterpieces by Fryderyk Chopin, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Liszt performed by Piotr Alexewicz.
