Celebrations of the Polish Independence Day in Paphos
13.11.2021
On November 13, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Nicosia and Paphos Municipality, organized a meeting on the occasion of the Polish Independence Day, attended by representatives of the Polish community and Cypriot guests.
As part of the "Niepodległa do Hymnu" campaign, gathered guests sang jointly the Polish national anthem "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego". After the official part, the artistic program was presented - a Polish musician, Zbigniew Irzeński, who lives in Cyprus, played patriotic songs on the accordion, and the local folk group "Ktima" performed traditional Cypriot dances. The guests could also visit the exhibition "Fathers of Independence", prepared by the Institute of National Remembrance. An important element of the ceremony was the presentation of the "Bene Merito" honorary distinction to the Mayor of Paphos, Mr Phedon Phedonos in recognition of his contribution to the development of Polish-Cypriot relations. On behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, distinction was presented by the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Cyprus, Mrs Irena Lichnerowicz-Augustyn.
Paphos, situated in the south-western part of Cyprus, plays a special role in the Polish-Cypriot relations due to the continuous, lasting more than half of the century, presence of Polish archaeological missions in this area. The Polish scientists had a significant contribution that Paphos was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Their excavations not only provided us with a knowledge about ancient culture, art and history of Cyprus and the entire Mediterranean world, but also had positive impact on the development of the city, constituting one of the greatest tourist attractions of the Island. Also Polish tourists, arriving numerously to Paphos every year, have a chance to find out its beauty and uniqueness.
Thank you again for accepting our invitation and being with us to celebrate together the Polish Independence Day!
