On March 14th 2022, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Nicosia organized the debate on the armed conflict in Ukraine and the role of women in shaping peace and security.
On March 14th 2022, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Nicosia organized a debate on the armed conflict in Ukraine, the role of women in shaping peace and security, the participation of women in military conflicts and peace processes as well as the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 with the participation of Polish experts: prof. Aleksandra Gasztold and PhD Kornela Oblińska from WIIS Poland *.
The debate took place at the University of Nicosia which, together with the UNIC Diplomatic Academy, was the co-organizer of the event.
Upon the invitation of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Nicosia, the event was attended by diplomats accredited to the Republic of Cyprus, representatives of UNFICYP and UN POL, members of the Cypriot administration, NGOs, journalists, activists and students.
The guests were welcomed by the Rector of the University of Nicosia, prof. Philippos Pouyioutas and the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Cyprus Mrs Irena Lichnerowicz-Augustyn. The opening address was delivered by senior vice-rector prof. Constantinos Phellas. In her speech, the Polish Ambassador referred to the ongoing invasion in Ukraine underlying Polish commitment and vast humanitarian aid provided to Ukrainian refugees. A minute of silence was held to honour the victims of Russian aggression.
The debate aimed to exchange views and experiences on the ways to increase involvement of women in international missions, operations and peace processes as well as the necessary structural support. The participants discussed the role of women in these processes and the reasons for the existing imbalance in the representation of women at all decision-making levels, including peace talks and negotiations.
The event was also the opportunity to establish close contacts between Polish and Cypriot experts, which will certainly result in further cooperation and implementation of joint projects in the future.
