The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland Mrs Irena Lichnerowicz-Augustyn and Minister of Interior of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Nicos Nouris. Representatives of the Civil Defence and media also witnessed the event.

Thanks to grants from the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland and the initiative of the Polish Center for International Aid (PCPM), 80  pre-fabricated housing units have reached Cyprus and will provide shelter to 240 refugees.

Polish aid is a response to the appeal made by the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus. For more than 3 years Cyprus has been facing the increasing migratory pressure and that’s why the urgent assistance is needed to expand the temporary housing infrastructure for the newly arrived refugees.

In her speech, Ambassador I. Lichnerowicz-Augustyn emphasized that the Polish donation results primarily from the need to show solidarity to our proven partner in the European Union which is the Republic of Cyprus. It is also a tangible Polish contribution to building an effective, humane and safe European migration policy. Ambassador also marked the 60th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Poland and Cyprus, celebrated this year.

In response, Minister Nicos Nouris thanked the government of the Republic of Poland and the Embassy of Poland for their help in the face of the migration crisis that Cyprus is experiencing and very difficult conditions in the existing reception centers.

The representative of the Polish Center for International Aid read a letter from the PCPM President Wojciech Wilk in which he thanked the Cypriot partners for a very good cooperation with the implementation of the project.

The event was covered by several TV stations.
