The Entry/Exit System (EES) officially goes live on October 12

12.10.2025

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a digital system that automatically registers non-EU travelers visiting for short stays each time they enter or leave participating European countries.

.

For the EES, a “non-EU national” is anyone who does not hold the nationality of an EU country, or of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. A “short stay” means staying in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This limit applies to all European countries that use the EES and is counted as one combined period across them.

To whom does the EES apply?

The system applies to you if you are a non-EU national who either:

  • needs a short-stay visa to travel to European countries using the EES, or
  • does not need a visa for a short stay in those countries.

Each time you enter or leave these countries — or if your entry is refused — your information will be electronically recorded in the EES.

What European countries use the System?

  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria

How the EES improves travel and security?

  • Modern and Efficient Border Checks

The EES will gradually replace passport stamps with a digital system that records when travellers enter and leave participating countries. This will make border checks faster and help border officers work more efficiently.

  • Faster and Easier Travel

With the EES, travellers will spend less time at the border thanks to quicker checks, self-service options, and the ability to provide information in advance.

  • Preventing Irregular Migration

The EES helps monitor who enters and leaves the Schengen Area by using fingerprint and facial data. This prevents overstays, identity fraud, and misuse of visa-free travel.

  • Stronger Security in the Schengen Area

The EES provides border and law enforcement authorities with important traveller information, helping them identify potential security risks and combat serious crime and terrorism.
