02.11.2025

On 2nd of November, representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Amman visited the Christian cemetery in Jerash, where Dr. Antoni Ostrasz (1929-1996) is buried - a Polish architect and conservator. From 1984 to 1996, he headed the project for the renovation of the hippodrome in the historic complex in Jerash. At the initiative of the office, Dr. Antoni Ostrasz's tombstone was restored with funds from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of the cemetery caretaker, who performed minor repairs and cleaning work pro bono.

In connection with this year's All Saints' Day, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Amman has undertaken minor repairs and cleaning work at the grave of Dr. Antoni Ostrasz at the Christian cemetery in Jerash. Chargé d'affaires a.i. Karol Leśniak and Consul Adrian Browarczyk commemorated the distinguished Pole by laying a commemorative wreath on November 2, 2025, and presenting the Polish architect's profile. Staff from the Polish Embassy in Amman participated in the visit.

From 1982 to 1996, Dr. Antoni Ostrasz led reconstruction work at the ruins in Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. In 1984, the Jordanian Department of Antiquities appointed the Polish archaeologist as director of the Jerash Hippodrome renovation project – a project he continued to lead until the end of his life.

The grave of Dr. Antoni Ostrasz is one of the few Polish memorial sites in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan that serve to preserve and strengthen national identity.
