11th "Our Ocean” Conference in Mombasa and the "Mombasa Ocean Festival”

On 16-18 June 2026, Chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Nairobi Marcin Kubiak and Second Secretary for Political and Economic Affairs Weronika Mincewicz-Podrecka participated in the 11th "Our Ocean” Conference in Mombasa, the first edition of the event held on the African continent.

The conference brought together more than 5,000 participants, and its programme focused on marine protected areas, the sustainable blue economy, the ocean–climate nexus, maritime security, sustainable fisheries and reducing marine pollution.

 

One of the main outcomes of the conference was the adoption by 16 countries of the Mombasa Declaration on fisheries transparency and the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. In addition, 320 voluntary commitments for ocean protection and the sustainable use of marine resources were announced, with a total value of USD 6.401 billion, submitted by 104 countries, institutions and organisations.

 

On 19 June, CdA a.i. Marcin Kubiak took part in a film screening at Fort Jesus, organised as part of the “Mombasa Ocean Festival”. During the official part of the event, the Head of the EU Delegation in Nairobi, Amb. Henrietta Geiger, opened a virtual gallery dedicated to the history of Fort Jesus and local cultural heritage. At the invitation of the organisers, CdA a.i. M. Kubiak delivered brief remarks referring to the 50th anniversary of EU–Kenya relations and Polish-Kenyan cultural and scientific cooperation. During his stay in Mombasa, CdA a.i. M. Kubiak also visited the frigate “Numancia”, serving as part of the EUNAVFOR “Atalanta” operation, and held meetings with representatives of the National Museums of Kenya.
