In a letter to the Polish community, Ambassador Jacek Bazański appeals for solidarity with the fellow countrymen persecuted in Belarus #FreePolesInBelarus

#FreePolesinBelarus

We encourage you to read the letter of Ambassador Jacek Bazański to the Polish community and the Poles living in Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Madagascar, Mauritius and  Seychelles, in which he asks for solidarity with the fellow countrymen currently persecuted in Belarus.

We would like to ask you to support actions to defend the rights of the Polish minority in Belarus as part of the #WolniPolacyNaBiałorusi #FreePolesInBelarus campaign.

The full text of the letter in Polish language can be downloaded below. Its unofficial translation into English reads as follows:

"Ladies and gentlemen,

In recent days, there have been massive attacks on the representatives of the Polish minority in Belarus by the regime of Alexander Lukashenka.

Arrested or detained were, inter alia, the newly re-elected President of the Union of Poles in Belarus, Ms. Andżelika Borys, and one of the leading activists, journalist Mr. Andrzej Poczobut. The offices and apartments of Polish activists in Belarus are being searched. The only reason for such unlawful treatment, violating the provisions of international law, and clearly infinging the bilateral obligations of Belarus to protect the Polish minority is the fact that they are Poles, demanding their rights and acting in accordance with them.

According to the provisions of the international law, national minorities have the right to freely express, cultivate and develop their ethnic, cultural, linguistic or religious identity. Polish activists are the subject of severe harassment for such activities by the regime in Minsk.

I would be grateful to you, on behalf of the Poles in Belarus and on my own behalf, for your support in defending the Polish minority in Belarus as part of the #WolniPolacynaBialorusi #FreePolesInBelarus campaign. Let our compatriots in Belarus feel that they are not alone, that the Polish diaspora and friends of Poland all over the world are behind them.

Yours faithfully,
Jacek Bazański"
