On 30 October, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland officially launched its development project entitled “Support for Informal Waste Pickers in Mombasa”, implemented in cooperation with the Pwani Circular Economy Association (PCEA).
The launch was accompanied by the distribution of personal protective equipment to a group of informal waste pickers from the Nyali area, as well as a forum attended by representatives of the local administration and community. The forum aimed to support this vulnerable social group in organising themselves and advocating more effectively for their rights.
Like many rapidly growing cities in Sub-Saharan Africa, Mombasa faces challenges in ensuring effective waste management. Informal waste pickers play a key role in this process, often working in extremely hazardous conditions without adequate protective equipment or social protection.
Funded through the “Polish Aid” programme, the project will provide support to a total of five groups of informal waste pickers from different parts of the city.
