Opening of an ecosystem information point for local communities in Amboseli region

On December 16th, the Amboseli Ecosystem Trust (AET) headquarters in Oloitokitok, Kajiado County, hosted the official opening of the ecosystem information point, established as part of a development project of the Embassy of Poland in Nairobi in collaboration with the African Conservation Centre (ACC) and AET.

The aim of the information point is to provide environmental knowledge to local Maasai communities in a modern, interactive, and accessible way. Thanks to the project, residents of the Amboseli region will gain knowledge on climate change, weather hazards, and strategies for more efficient and resilient livestock and farmland management while simultaneously caring for the environment.

Amboseli is a unique region of Kenya at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, attracting thousands of tourists every year. Increasingly frequent droughts are harming both the unique wildlife and the Maasai agricultural communities, which largely rely on pastoralism and agriculture. Disseminating knowledge about more efficient agricultural techniques and providing early warning of droughts are key to improving environmental protection in Amboseli.

The official opening of the ecosystem information point brought together representatives of the local community, the Kajiado County government, NGOs from Kenya and Tanzania, and scientists. The Polish Embassy was represented by Paweł Pijanowski, Secretary for Development Cooperation.
