Polish-Ugandan Mining Conference in Kampala
27.11.2025
On November 21, 2025, the "Polish-Ugandan Mining Sector Conference" was held at the Mestil Hotel in Kampala. It was organized by the Polish Embassy in Nairobi and the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH) in cooperation with the Polish Geological Institute (PIG).
The conference was opened by the Chief National Geologist, Undersecretary of State Krzysztof Galos, and the Ugandan Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa, who emphasized that Poland's extensive experience and advanced mining technologies can be widely applied in a country as geologically promising as Uganda. Minister Nankabirwa also emphasized that mining and its modernization are among the top priorities of the Ugandan government.
After the official opening ceremony attended by the ministers, Ambassador Mirosław Gojdź, and the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Kampala, Ephraim Kamuntu, the conference was held in three panels on business, financial solutions for mining, and research & education.
The Polish conference participants, in addition to Minister Galos, included representatives of business, primarily the KGHM Group, and educational and research institutions (PGI, AGH University of Science and Technology, and the Łukasiewicz Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals). The Ugandan side included representatives of the Chamber of Energy and Minerals, the State Mining Company, the Uganda Development Bank, and the Uganda Investment Authority. Approximately 250 people attended.
At the conclusion of the conference, the participants adopted a Joint Statement outlining the directions for Polish-Ugandan cooperation in mining, in areas such as geological exploration, mining technologies, and education.
Due to the extensive representation of KGHM, the conference was also accompanied by a local government mission from the Lower Silesia region, headed by Deputy Governor Jarosław Rabczenko, who, together with Irene Batebe, Minister of Mining at the Uganda Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, officially closed the event. The following day, the Deputy Governor, accompanied by Ambassador Gojdź, visited the Polish cemetery in Koja near Kampala.
On November 22-23, Minister Galos, together with representatives of the Polish Geological Institute, the AGH University of Science and Technology, the Łukasiewicz Institute, KGHM, the Polish Investment and Trade Agency, and the embassy, undertook a series of field visits to mining-related sites in southwestern Uganda, renowned for its exceptional mineral resources, including copper, tin, tungsten, iron, and more.
The conference was widely covered in the local press and television. Representatives of the Polish press, including Polish Radio and Gazeta Wyborcza, also attended the event, accompanying the Lower Silesia delegation.
