Closer military cooperation with Turkey

- Yesterday, the presidents of Poland and Turkey talked about security on NATO’s eastern flank, including the security of Poland and Turkey. They also discussed our military cooperation. This is the framework that we, the defense ministers, fill with a content - said Mariusz Błaszczak, the Minister of National Defense after the meeting with Hulusi Akar, the Minister of National Defense of Turkey.

On Tuesday, May 25 this year, the Minister of National Defense met with the Turkish Minister of National Defense. Defense ministers discussed, inter alia, military cooperation, both bilateral and within the framework of NATO. They also raised matters related to further strengthening the security of NATO’s southern flank region.

- Polish soldiers are present in Turkey. They train together with Turkish soldiers within NATO missions, as part of NATO commands operating in Turkey. Turkish soldiers, in turn, are present in Poland in the frames of NATO commands. Soon, we are expecting representatives of the Turkish Air Force with 4 F-16 planes that will be located in Malbork. This cooperation develops very dynamically - emphasized Minister Mariusz Błaszczak after the meeting.

- We share the threats that concern our countries as well as the entire North Atlantic Alliance. We are looking for the best answers to these threats. Undoubtedly, cooperation between Poland and Turkey is an important response - said the Minister of National Defense of Poland.

On the first day the Minister of National Defense visited Turkey, both sides signed a contract for the purchase of modern armaments for the Polish Army. The ministers of Poland and Turkey also signed an agreement between the Government of the Republic of Poland and the Government of the Republic of Turkey on the mutual protection of classified information in the field of defense industry.

- I am very glad that yesterday I had the honor to sign the contract for the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles. It is a very good weapon. A proven weapon that significantly increases the capabilities of the Polish Army. (...) This is a combat drone. This is the drone we bought with armaments. Today we have also discussed other possible areas of cooperation, including artillery and various fields of modernization of the Polish Army - said Minister Mariusz Błaszczak.

In 2017, the defense ministers of Poland and Turkey signed a Declaration of Intent, which defines the areas of further defense cooperation. The document indicates, inter alia, strengthening of joint efforts in continued adaptation of NATO to security threats and challenges, and enhancing defense industry cooperation.
