European Union (EU) missions and operations

Poland is a member of the European Union since 2004, the engagement in the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) is – apart from the membership in NATO and cooperation with key partners – one of the primary pillars of Poland's security. Poland opts for increasing the global role of the EU and for strengthening CSDP. We perceive this policy as an indispensable addition to initiatives carried out within NATO and as a tool to enhance cooperation with the EU’s neighbors, including Eastern Partnership countries. Thus, Poland gets actively involved in the CSDP military operations.

  • Polish soldiers have been present in Bosnia and Herzegovina for almost 25 years. Our involvement began with participation in the international mission IFOR in 1995. Polish 16th airborne battalion was a part of the Nordic-Polish Brigade (NORDPOLBDE).
  • The EUTM RCA mission is part of the broader European Union commitment (political, economic, development aid and security) in response to the crisis in the Central African Republic.
  • From April 1, 2020, Poland is continuing its commitment to the security of the European Union and takes part in the new EU operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, which focuses on enforcing the arms embargo on Libya. In addition, we delegate officers to the headquarters of EUNAVFOR Atalanta, a naval operation to combat piracy off the coast of the Horn of Africa.
