Poland and Italy strengthen their defence cooperation

We are here with minister Guido Crosetto, a great friend of Poland. Minister Guido is also my personal friend in the group of ministers of defence of NATO and European Union countries. Our Polish-Italian alliance is the strongest it has ever been. It is thanks to the Italian Air Force that the operation on the night of September 9 and 10 this year - the operation of combating Russian drones - could succeed. The Italian Air Force, taking part in the Air Policing mission, had a hand in reconnaissance and sharing information. Without Italian planes, Italian pilots, it would have been impossible. I have thanked for it during today's meetings in the name of the Polish nation, all our soldiers and citizens of Poland - said the deputy prime minister W. Kosiniak-Kamysz after meeting the Italian minister of defence. The deputy prime minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz visited Rome on 7 November, where he has met with Guido Crosetto, minister of defence of Italy.

Spotkanie ministrów obrony Polski i Włoch

- Today we have discussed matters connected to SAFE, the European programme. Poland and Italy are in the group of first four countries that will benefit from and have gained the most of all the European countries from the SAFE programme – loans for equipment and armaments purchase. These are very favourable loans, repayable until the year 2070. We have been talking about joint procurement and initiatives of the Polish and Italian industries. The Italian defence industry is outstanding, greatly developed. Our signed contracts are being fulfilled – AW101 and AW149 with Leonardo. We are also cooperating with other companies. Our pilots train on Italian-made planes. Italian companies also have a presence in Poland – thousands of Polish workers are employed in them. This is the community created by our actions. The decision to work on a new treaty for military cooperation between Poland and Italy is yet another matter. We will shortly sign a Memorandum of Understanding regarding this cooperation, including shared exercises and military presence.
- the Polish minister of defence noted

Bilateral defensive relations and the perspectives of their development, Polish and Italian contribution to Allied security through presence at the eastern and southern flank and EU actions towards security, including the implementation of the SAFE instrument, were among the topics of bilateral talks.

- I have invited the minister to the Polish-Belarussian border, where he will be able to see the “Eastern Shield” and the anti-drone and air defence initiatives. We have long discussed the situation in Ukraine. Poland and Italy have been supporting the fighting Ukraine from the beginning – in the interest of European and our own security. There lies the threshold of Polish, Italian and European security, on the Russian-Ukrainian frontline. We will act together, we not only exchange experience, but also put it in practice. We have talked a lot about drone systems. The Italians are interested in our solutions. We have very good companies, including in the private sector, the largest manufacturers of drones in Europe.

- the deputy prime minister W. Kosiniak-Kamysz said in Rome.
