Poland and Norway tighten defence cooperation - Memorandum signed
29.09.2025
- We have an ironclad alliance with Norway, who has been proving it for years. Together, we are building a training centre at the Nowa Dęba training grounds. This shows Norway's great involvement in cooperation. We are similar in our outlook on dangers, and react to them in a similar way. Norway is our proven ally. They can always count on us - said the deputy prime minister after the meeting with the minister of defence of Norway.
On 29 September, deputy prime minister-minister of national defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has met with the minister of defence of Norway, Tore Sandvik. A Memorandum of Understanding regarding the tightening of bilateral defence cooperation was signed.
- We start the day with a meeting that’s very important for Poland, with the minister of national defence of the Kingdom of Norway. We have an ironclad alliance with Norway, they are a proven ally, there’s ample evidence of that given in many places and times. These Polish-Norwegian ties, this shared solidarity in the face of threats is a great thing. We have shared experiences, we have shared tasks. (…). We feel about and react the threats facing us in a similar way. We have the sensitivity to what Russia is doing. It is probably different from what some countries in Southern or Central Europe have. We are very attuned to it, we know what those threats from Russia really mean and we respond to them in a coordinated manner. (…) This is the main task for NATO countries today, and for the EU countries. Dear Tore, I am thankful that you are in Poland once again. This shows your personal involvement as well. Your first visit, soon after your appointment, was to the base at Krzesiny near Poznań, to your Norwegian pilots that have been patrolling the Polish airspace at the time. Today we are in Warsaw, and tomorrow we will be in Podkarpacie, where our troops: Polish, Norwegian and Ukrainian train together.
- said the minister of national defence after the meeting.
- The Polish-Norwegian cooperation for security takes place on many levels. The presence of Norwegian F-35 aircraft, the NASAMS systems, training soldiers, collaboration of industries – these are our actions. We want to develop drone capabilities together. We have to learn from Ukraine, but also develop the cooperation of our own companies
- the deputy prime minister stressed.
The decision to sign the Memorandum of Understanding lays the groundwork for further, deep bilateral defence cooperation between Poland and Norway, the aim of which is strengthening the defence of both countries, regional security, as well as NATO deterrence and defence. The Memorandum enhances the dialogue on common interests and security challenges, increasing the operational effect by using resources, strengthening interoperability and the ability to act in concert. Shared activities will encompass all levels of defence, i.e. the political and military level (strategic, operational and tactical).
- Poland is crucial for any defence policy, not just geographically but also as someone who contributes to European security in a major way. Norway and Poland have shared security interests. Our cooperation will be increasingly important in the near future. I have visited Poland a few times, as I said – I have visited Norwegian soldiers defending Polish skies with F-35 aircraft twice. (…). We are in NATO together, we are working very closely together and NATO means solidarity. The partnership between Norway and Poland is very important to NATO, as well as to Europe. The most important thing that we can do for our security is continuing our support for Ukraine. Our cooperation is well-understood when it comes to the collaboration of defence industries.
- said Tore O. Sandvik, minister of defence of Norway.
