Poland's cooperation with the Visegrad Group (V4)

The Visegrad Group is a regional cooperation forum that includes the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia - Central European countries that are also members of the European Union and NATO. We are connected not only by our neighborhood and similar geopolitical conditions, but also by common history, culture and traditions.

The date of establishing the V4 is February 15, 1991, i.e. the date of the meeting of the presidents of the Group's countries in the Hungarian city of Vysehrad. On that day, the main goals of the V4 organization were set:

  • the cooperation within the framework of European and transatlantic integration;
  • consultations and coordinated joint actions;
  • to work out a coherent position of the V4 countries in the international arena.

The Group's activities focus on strengthening stability and security in the Central European region.

Cooperation within the V4 is not institutional in nature, it is based on consultations in selected areas, conducted by representatives of government administration institutions and non-governmental organizations. The only mechanism for organizing the work of the V4 are the annual Presidencies held by the V4 countries.

On July 1, 2020, Poland took the annual presidency of the Visegrad Group and presided over the work of the V4 until June 30, 2021. The slogan of V4 cooperation during this presidency was "Back on track". The presidency coincided with the unprecedented global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which, along with the process of dealing with its consequences,affected the course of the Polish presidency. The V4 countries actively cooperated to tackle the effects of the coronavirus epidemic, working together to put socio-economic life in the region and the EU back on track.

The Polish Presidency coincided with the celebrations important for the V4: the 30th anniversary of establishing Visegrad cooperation (February 1991), and the continuation of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the International Visegrad Fund (IVF) in June 2000.

During the Polish presidency of the V4, a number of projects had been planned, including in the area of defense.
