Polish Armed Forces in the TAMT mission in Turkey

In April 2021, Poland joins NATO’s Tailored Assurance Measures mission in Turkey. Polish naval aviators will patrol the eastern part of the Mediterranean for several months and provide reconnaissance to Allies. This is the first mission of the Polish Armed Forces in Turkey.

Pursuant to the decision of the President of the Republic of Poland, the contingent will consist of up to 80 personnel who will carry out their mission with the M28 Bryza patrol and reconnaissance aircraft. The contingent is comprised of personnel from the Naval Aviation Brigade from Gdynia under the lead of Commander (Pol Navy) Cezary Kurkowski.

The main mission of the M28 Bryza patrol and reconnaissance aircraft will be monitoring the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea, and cooperate with NATO’s standing naval groups and NATO’s Maritime Command (MARCOM) in Northwood, UK. The crew and the plane will be stationed at İncirlik airport.

NATO began providing support to individual countries of the Alliance (Assurance Measures) in 2014. In late 2015, Allies agreed on a package of Tailored Assurance Measures for Turkey (TAMT) to respond to the increasing security challenges on Turkish borders. These measures include additional AWACS presence in the region; increased maritime activities in the Eastern Mediterranean; and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance activities and information sharing.

The presence of allies also means support for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and the presence of patrol aircraft in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Activities in support of Turkey are carried out from land, sea and air in the eastern part of the territory of the North Atlantic Alliance.

The Polish Armed Forces take part in numerous missions abroad under the flag of NATO, the European Union and the United Nations. Poles are present in Latvia (enhanced Forward Presence), Romania (tailored Forward Presence), Afghanistan (Resolute Support - NATO training mission), as well as Italy (Irini - EU mission) and in Lebanon (UN).

Poland also hosts US and Allied soldiers on its territory and is also home to NATO commands such as the Multinational Corps North-East (Szczecin), Multinational Division North-East (Elbląg), Joint Forces Training Center (Bydgoszcz) and many other units that cooperate with the North Atlantic Alliance on a daily basis.
