The Polish Armed Forces will strengthen border protection in the Kaliningrad Oblast’s neighborhood

02.11.2022

“I have decided to take measures to strengthen security on the Polish border with the Kaliningrad Oblast. Therefore, today works to construct a temporary wall on our border begins. It will be undertaken by the Polish Armed Forces’ military engineers(…) We use the experience gained last year. There is no doubt that the temporary “dam” has protected the Polish-Belarusian border. It has prevented a hybrid attack from Belarusian territory, or at least it slowed it down significantly” said Mariusz Błaszczak, Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of National Defense, at a press conference.

On November 2, at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense in Warsaw, Mariusz Błaszczak, the head of the Ministry of National Defense, made a statement addressing the increase of the protection of the Polish border with Russia.

Deputy Prime Minister M. Błaszczak informed that a wall would be built on the Polish border with the Kaliningrad Oblast, which would strengthen the protection of the state border. Soldiers of engineering units are involved in its construction. The “dam” will be built on the basis of experiences gained through the construction of a fence on the Polish-Belarusian border.

“We discussed this matter at the Security and Defense Committee meeting. The talks regarded the coordination of the work of ministries responsible for the security of the Republic of Poland. It resulted in the decision to start works on the construction of a temporary wall on the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast. It will consist of three rows of razor wire, which is used by the military around the world. It will be the same as the one that was built on the Polish-Belarusian border. We need and wish the border to be leak-proof"

- Minister Błaszczak informed.

Deputy Prime Minister noted that the fence will be equipped with perimeter systems.

"It will consist of three rows of razor wire, 3 m wide and 2.5 m high. At the same time, work will be carried out to establish perimetry. These are devices that will allow electronic border surveillance"

- He said.

“We start work immediately, as soon as today. We do not set deadlines. Polish engineers have the appropriate experience they acquired a year ago by building such a dam on the border with Belarus. Let me remind you that this dam saved our country from the flood of migrants who were brought to Belarus. It was, in my deep conviction, a plan written by the Kremlin, the purpose of which was to destabilize Poland and to prevent support for Ukraine. First, they wanted to destabilize Poland, then they attacked Ukraine. Polish soldiers have the appropriate experience. They protected the Polish-Belarusian border. I am convinced that they will also protect the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast"

- said Deputy Prime Minister.

Deputy Prime Minister called for the decision to build the wall on the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast not to be used for political purposes.

"I hope that this time the opposition will not organize excursions to the border, it will not put pressure on Polish soldiers and border guards, and it will not harass them. What happened last year was proof that the opposition and celebrities, using the favor of their media, tried to force border guards and soldiers to open the border so that migrants could illegally cross borders. But the society stood behind the Polish uniform. I am convinced that it will also be the case this time. We will see how the opposition will behave, regardless, our task is to ensure the security of Poland"

- he pointed out.
