Poland in the OPCW Executive Council

29.11.2023

Poland has been elected to the OPCW Executive Council for the term 2024-2026.

2023

The decision was taken at the 28th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Conventions (CWC) in The Hague. Alongside Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine were elected, while Russia lost the vote and the seat on the Executive Council, which supervises the activities of the Technical Secretariat and is responsible for promoting the effective implementation of and compliance with the Convention.

123 votes cast in favour prove that Poland, being a longstanding and strong supporter of the CWC, continues to be regarded as a credible and constructive State Party committed to fulfilling the goal of achieving a world safe from the threat of chemical weapons. The States Parties recognized also Poland’s role in supporting the implementation of the CWC, including through its annually adopted UNGA resolution.

The vote has shown that the overwhelming majority of the States Parties share the view that Russia’s continued brutal war of aggression against Ukraine disqualifies it currently as member of the Executive Council.
