The launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is planned for 2027. An ETIAS travel authorisation will be required exclusively for foreign nationals. The date of the entry into operation will be communicated at a later stage.

If you are a visa-exempt national travelling legally to any of the 30 participating European countries (the Schengen Area Member States and Cyprus), you will need an ETIAS travel authorisation to travel to Europe when the system enters into operation. ETIAS authorisation is not a visa, but it will constitute a mandatory entry requirement.

The authorisation is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport and remains valid for three years or until the expiry of the passport, whichever occurs first. If a new passport is issued, a new ETIAS travel authorisation must be obtained.

Holders of a valid ETIAS travel authorisation may enter the territory of the above-mentioned European countries multiple times for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

However, possession of an ETIAS authorisation does not guarantee entry. Upon arrival at the external border, border control authorities will request the traveller’s passport and any other relevant documentation and will verify whether all entry conditions have been met.
