IV Euro-Venezuelan Jazz Festival

The fourth edition of the Euro-Venezuelan Jazz Festival is taking place in Caracas and La Guaira from 14 September to 2 October. The festival brings together six European countries with diplomatic representation in Venezuela (Poland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland) as well as the Delegation of the European Union and Belgium.

Poland is represented at this year’s festival by Dr. Piotr Schmidt, an acclaimed Polish trumpeter, composer and music producer.

On 25 September, Piotr Schmidt led a masterclass on jazz improvisation at the Faculty of Architecture of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV). The session brought together 50 experienced musicians, offering them an opportunity to exchange experiences with the Polish artist and deepen their knowledge of contemporary jazz.

On 25 and 26 September, Schmidt performed in Caracas alongside three renowned Venezuelan jazz musicians, presenting a repertoire drawn from his latest albums. The joint performances were part of the musical project “Piotr Schmidt Quartet”.

The first concert took place at the UCV Concert Hall and served as the closing event of this year’s European Education Fair “Conecta con Europa”, organised by the EU Delegation in cooperation with the EUNIC Caracas cluster, currently chaired by Poland. The concert was opened by Daniel Gromann, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Poland, and Dr. Víctor Rago, Rector of the UCV. The programme also featured ensembles representing Switzerland and Venezuela alongside the Polish artist.

The second concert, jointly organised by the Embassies of Poland and Switzerland, took place at the Monte Sacro Cultural Centre and had a charitable purpose. Attendees were invited to bring school supplies to be donated to children affected by the earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June this year. The event opened with remarks by the Ambassador of Switzerland and concluded with a performance by Piotr Schmidt.

One of the highlights of the concert was Schmidt’s performance of “After the Catastrophe”, a piece originally composed as a tribute to the victims of the bombing of Warsaw during the Second World War. Piotr Schmidt also dedicated the piece to the victims of the earthquakes in Venezuela, giving the performance a particularly meaningful dimension of solidarity, remembrance and international unity.
