Ceremonies commemorating the participation of the 1st Armoured Division of General Stanisław Maczek in the liberation of Belgium - Lommel, 28 September 2025
19.09.2025
On September 28, a ceremony commemorating the participation of General Stanisław Maczek's 1st Armored Division in the liberation of Belgium will be held at the Polish war cemetery in Lommel, Limburg.
This year marks 81 years since General Stanisław Maczek's 1st Armored Division began its victorious campaign in Belgium, liberating successive cities and towns from German occupation. The price of this victory was the lives of many young soldiers, 257 of whom are buried at the Polish war cemetery in Lommel.
To honor their memory, each year the Polish Embassy in Brussels, together with the City of Lommel and the Association of Poles in Belgium, organizes a ceremony at the Polish war cemetery in Lommel to pay tribute to those who died for the freedom of both countries and to pray for peace. The ceremony is attended by representatives of Polish and Belgian authorities, the diplomatic corps, numerous Polish diaspora organizations, veterans' families, and students from Polish and Polish diaspora schools.
Keeping with our annual tradition, we cordially invite Poles living in Belgium and their Belgian friends to participate in this unique ceremony and to join us in discovering the history of Polish soldiers fighting on Belgian soil.
The event will be conducted in three languages: Polish, Dutch, and English.
