Declaration of support for Mr. Juan Guaidó

In her statement on the 26th of January on behalf of all Member States, the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini called Mr. Nicolás Maduro for the urgent holding of free, transparent and credible presidential elections. The statement indicated that in the absence of an announcement on the organisation of democratic elections over the next days, the EU would take further actions, including on the issue of recognition of the country´s leadership, in line with article 233 of the Venezuelan constitution.

In view of Nicolás Maduro’s failure to call early presidential elections, Poland acknowledges Mr. Juan Guaidó, President of the democratically elected National Assembly, as interim President of Venezuela, in order for him to call for free, fair and democratic presidential elections.

We reaffirm our support to the National Assembly and its President. We also reiterate the position of the EU that the fundamental freedoms of the Venezuelan people must be respected and any actions undermining democratic mandate of the National Assembly should be avoided.
