MFA statement

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly denies that, in his interview for Der Spiegel, Minister Jacek Czaputowicz had allegedly demanded that US nuclear missiles be deployed in Europe. The title of the article, which appeared today in the online version of the weekly, does not reflect the substance of his interview.

In his interview with a journalist from the German weekly concerning the INF Treaty, the chief of Polish diplomacy observed that today Europe relies on nuclear deterrence guaranteed by the North Atlantic Alliance. He also indicated that the continued presence of US forces, including nuclear ones, on our Continent lies in Europe’s interest.

Asked about the possibility of deploying nuclear arms in the territory of Poland, Minister Czaputowicz clearly emphasized that “we don’t wish that to happen at all.” The chief of Polish diplomacy did not exclude the possibility that in the future nuclear arms will guarantee peace in our part of the world, like they do now. However, he left any possible decisions regarding the place where this type of arms could be stationed to NATO’s exclusive decision.

Today, nuclear arms are located in the territory of several European countries.

At present, NATO is reviewing the impact of the deployment of Russian nuclear missiles banned under the INF Treaty on its security in order to ensure a reliable and effective policy of deterrence and defence. Poland fully supports this policy which includes a nuclear component and will consistently implement its Allied commitments.
