Environment Council meeting

06.03.2020

The European Green Deal, including the presentation of European Climate Law and the Just Transformation Mechanism, as well as the proposal to submit to the UNFCCC Secretariat the EU long-term climate strategy were among the main topics of the Environment Council (ENVI), during which Poland was represented by Deputy Minister of Climate Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński.

During the Council, a proposal of a new European Climate Law was presented, which sets the goal for EU climate neutrality by 2050 and according to which the European Commission will present (until September) a plan to raise the EU's reduction target by 2030 to 50-55%.

"Poland supports the climate neutrality goal in the European Union by 2050, in accordance with the decision taken at the EU summit in December 2019. We are of the opinion that the new EU law should reflect the arrangements adopted at that time. Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 requires above all a realistic action plan tailored to the actual circumstances on the ground as well as providing adequate funding" said the deputy minister for climate while presenting the Polish position.

During the ENVI Council, Deputy Minister Guibourgé-Czetwertyński also presented the Polish proposal to reconsider free emission allowances for aviation under the ETS, which was supported by many member states and the European Commission.
